The Chesham Bois Heritage Group was formed as a result of widespread
interest in the development and architectural history of the village. This
became apparent following the talk given by Julian Hunt at the Annual Parish
Meeting in 2005. The society is aiming to promote a wider historical
understanding and enjoyment of the heritage of Chesham Bois and its residents
past and present.
The society is compiling records that may be later
produced as a booklet of buildings, their architects and builders, former and
current owners and together with other architectural features of note within
the parish boundaries of Chesham Bois.
There were relatively few
buildings and residents in the parish before 1860. After that time, the
development of the area proceeded in waves, of which arguably the most
important was the building of "Arts and Crafts" houses between about 1903 and
1925. The society has therefore chosen 1925 as the end of the period currently
being studied. Census records and historical directories are available from
1841 with often ambiguous data but it is the current occupiers of these
properties who may be able to help complete the record.
All residents
of Chesham Bois are welcome to participate, but in particular the society
appeals to occupiers of houses built before 1925 to reply to the following
questionnaire and post details to The Parish Council Office, Glebe Way, Chesham
Bois, HP6 5ND. Tel: 01494 432585 or email
