I was intrigued and bemused by this information, although I confess I haven't thoroughly checked it all:
  • Pimlico is the only London Underground station whose name doesn't include any one of the letters from the word "badger".
  • St John's Wood is the only one not to include any letters from the word "mackerel".
  • Hoxton, proposed to open in 2010, will be the only station containing none of the letters of either word.
And if that's not enough: Ohio is the only US state which contains none of the letters of "mackerel"; Swindon Town is the only UK professional football club and Fiji, Djibouti and Togo are the only three countries in the world with the same (weird and irrelevant) characteristic

Who on earth worked that out (and indeed, why)?

...and when London Overground (due to start operations in November) take over the East London Line in 2010, Whitechapel station will have London UNDERGROUND trains on the District and Hammersmith & City Lines running above and OVER trains on the London OVERGROUND line which will run below!

Plus Amersham station is the only Underground station to include the letters A, M, E, R, S, H, A and M in that order! Hee hee.

I love Whitechapel station! In my uni days in Mile End I often use to have confused US tourists ask me how to get to the Tower of London. They would get the Hammersmith and City Line (from Liverpool St.) instead of the Circle- pass Aldgate East (thinking it was Aldgate) and be confused at Whitechapel. I would then send them to the Westbound platform for a Wimbledon/Richmond/Ealing Bdy train. Of course they would go straight down to the East London Line and end up in New Cross/New Cross Gate!

The main line into Euston goes under the underground metropolitan line and it has also been suggested, goes under the Jubilee underground line as well (around Swiss Cottage).

The longest distance between two "underground" stations is Chesham to Chalfont & Latimer.

Amersham is the highest station on the "underground", almost 600 feet above sea level.

Which two underground stations can you travel between, and both journeys there and back can be made on northbound trains ?

Doesn't the Thameslink line go underneath the Met line too or do they run on the same lines ?

Thameslink goes beneath the Met through the Clerkenwell Tunnel between Kings Cross and Farenden.

One could argue that the Thameslink line was originally built my the Metropolitan along with the Great Northern (I think) so originally was partly an underground line, but I might be splitting hairs here!

Slightly off topic, but still part of Underground Trivia, did anyone else see the programme this week about Ghosts of the Underground?

Saw it the other year, quite interesting. Having used the Bakerloo line a lot I was interested in the story that you can sometimes see a reflection of someone sitting next to you in the window, but when you turn to look at them, there is no one there!

I'm not a frequent user of the Underground and I certainly wouldn't use it late at night on my own, but if I did and I saw that I don't think I'd ever go on it again.

When I was a teenager and used to travel home very late at night I used to find stations and trains very spooky late at night (but not ghost spooky) and would often talk nicely to the driver and travel in the cab with him.

Quite right, the Jubilee does run over the WCML. You will notice it on a northbound Jubilee train most. When travelling between St John's Wood and Swiss Cottage there is a distinctive 'lurch' as the summit of the climb over the WCML is reached, just prior to Swiss Cottage station.

I think this one will be snapped up quickly but on which line can you travel consecutively through 10 stations all beginning with the same letter?

If it's the answer on Wikipedia's LU Linguistic Trivia page, it's a bit of a cheat. ;)

The Metropolitan Railway built the widened lines along side their own because they were fed up of other railway companies using and conjesting their tracks! Good shout too! I believe the Thameslink/First Cap Connect will stop using Moorgate soon, when is this due? What will become of Moorgate?

A bit of a cheat it may be Fran but quite legal nevertheless!
