Hello there. We have heard noises coming from our loft for over a week now. Initially it started with some loud noises in the middle of the night lasting for half an hour. Now we can hear the noises during the day although they are not so loud now, more scratchy than anything else. We called a local pest control man who has set various traps but still can't identify the pest and still can't catch it/them. We are going on holiday on Thursday and I'm worried that they will move into the house while we're away, or gnaw through cable and cause a fire. I don't know whether to try another firm or stick with this company. He says he will get them in the end but I'm just wondering if I should put my trust in him. Has anyone else had similar experiences? Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get rid of them? Can anyone recommend a good firm? Also, if there are any pest control contractors out there, can you tell me if you charge the customer for the one job or do you charge for the number of times you come round the house to check the traps and re-set the bait? And do you charge if you don't get results?

It could be a glis glis - a friend of mine had them - they are difficult to get rid of and you have to get experts in. You can find more information on them on another part of this website - http://www.amersham.org.uk/glis.htm _ you can at least see if this is what you think you have and contact a company that deals with them. I haven't used any pest control companies since we have been here so can;'t offer any suggestions on that. Good Luck.

2 years ago we had noises in both our lofts and also in the walls of our kitchen, at one stage I could actually hear gnawing which totally freaked me out. We are aware because we live backing onto a farm with haybarns about 200 yards from our barn that we are at risk from rats and as we don't have any trees nearby I guessed they were unlikely to be glis glis. I got 2 sonic rodent repellents, plugged one into the kitchen and one into our bedroom and we've not had a problem since.

So if you live surrounded by trees it could be glis glis and/or squirrels, or mice/rats none of which you really want in your house!

From your description, I think you may have an infestation of nimbys. Pesky little buggers who generally make a nuisance of themselves when dissatisfied with living conditions in their own neighbourhood. May occasionally be found in the pages of amersham.org. 12 gauge shot might be an appropriate treatment. B)
