I realise the weather is about to turn unsummery, but I live in hope the summer will come back, and when it does, can anyone suggest local pubs that do good food (but not necessarily full-on gastro) and that have pleasant gardens (not right beside a main road), with enough seats to be in with a chance of getting one?

The Red Lion in Little Missenden is a good bet.....food is far from gourmet - but good value & tasty, lots of ducks waddling around waiting to steal your chips! Charming pub in a pretty village, and you can nearly always park nearby.

The newly refurbed Elephant & Castle gets my vote. Every chance of getting a seat, but of course, it always makes sense to book at peak times. You can specify a garden seat -- and it's also a good place to escape the games, if you've a mind to do so. There are some imaginative menu items, too.

The Full Moon Hawridge/Cholesbury common has a very good garden and is extremely popular. The Black Horse, Vale Road, Chesham also has an excellent garden and is popular with good food but apparently no highchairs (not that Fran's son needs them) or children's menu.

However, probably my favourite is the Blue Ball in Asheridge, large garden, good food and pleasant hosts.

None of these 3 are gourmet pubs but they all do good honest food in large portions and not expensive. However, it's also worth mentioning that they are all dog friendly pubs so may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Thanks for the suggestions, none of which I've been to (we tried the Pomeroy Inn, whose food is quite good, but the garden was full).

Another option is the Bedford Arms in Chenies, which has a beautiful garden and serves both pub and proper restaurant food.

Now we just need the sun to come back.

Ate there today. Food was decidedly middling, but it wasn't expensive and the place has an endearingly shabby demeanour that is a refreshing change from the chain-owned pubs and more aspirational gastropub places.

We'd go back, but probably not very often considering the wealth of other good places in the area.

Summer returning today, yay!
The Swan and The Crown in Ley Hill - Swan is more restaurant-y then the Crown. Both pubs are next to each other and you might get a spot of Cricket to watch across the (minor) road.
We also like to go to the Black Cat in Lye Green for Sunday Lunch. We only go when it's sunny and sit in the garden as the bar is quite small and the overflow seating in their function room is not the most atmospheric!! It's nice an unpretentious. http://www.blackcatchesham.co.uk/
