Hello John and welcome to the forum, though I won't presume to welcome you to Amersham as you've been here ten times as long as me!

I don't really have the same taste in shops, but many of my friends are or have been IT consultants and I share your interest in good food and good countryside. :)

  • Interests:I would love to be able to call myself an artist as I am often found with pencil/brush in hand, but I don't really think my scribblings merit the title of artwork!? I enjoy walking and appreciating local countryside ( which is why I left London ) I am an avid reader, enjoy socialising/eating out and spending time with my close friends ( most of which are still in London ) I enjoy going the movies, as long as there is something decent on, which there doesn't seem to have been for a while (sigh) and just chilling out in the garden, glass of red in hand :)

Hello,We started visiting Amersham last year and we think it will be a lovely place to bring up our children.Charlotte

Oh I will say a most definate 'YES' to that  I moved here with my partner and daughter in late 2005 for the very same reason. So glad to have left london ( huge sigh! )

Hi all,I'm an IT consultant, primarily in the corporate and healthcare markets. No wife, children or pets to brag about.Likes and interests... Photography

John hello from me.Well my partner has worked in IT for many 'many' years, and I am a keen photographer ( plus wannabe artist ) is very much a hobby right now.I agree with your thoughts on Amersham, is such a pity we are soon to live the place, Buckinghamshire in fact. But it has been great being here for the last 3 years ( almost! )

Hi Francis and welcome to the forum. Will you be visiting Amersham for long and are there any particular things you want to see or do while you are here?

Hi there, i am reletively new to the forum so thought i would say a proper Hi..... I have alaways lived in Old Amersham, in fact in the same house and attended St Marys school as did my mum before me and my 5 children after me!!!! I have researched my family tree and found that mums family hail from Coleshill and dads from Little Kingshill so i guess that makes me a "real" local girl. I have seen many changes in the old town but can still remember as if it was yesterday the excitement we all felt when Tescos finally opened! The VG store that served us before wasnt really up to much , and the disappearence of the bakers and the fruit and veg shop made it much worse and for those of us without a car Tescos became "heaven" ...
As my board name suggests i have 5 children, although only 3 still young enough to live at home still. I know how lucky i am to live in such a lovely little town and after studying the history and becoming part of it i hope that one day my children will too realise how fortunate they are/were......

Well Mrs Five
You humble us, as a father of 3 living and 2 not, I can not imagine a more suitable place to grow up and live, if money was suddenly no object, I'd buy a better place, not move.

Hello Everyone

I am relatively new to the area - well I have been here for fifteen months. I live in Little Chalfont with my husband and little baby and I am really keen to find out more about the area and local services. Prior to Little Chalfont I lived in London and absolutley love living here.

Hello and welcome. Having a small child can provide good openings for meeting people, initially via toddler groups and later via nursery and school.

Hi. My name's Geoff and I've lived in Amersham for around 12 years now having moved here from Ealing. I work in Milton Keynes as a manager in for a healthcare company and my wife works in Chesham. My daughter attends Dr Challoner's School in Little Chalfont. My main hobbies are photography amd Field Archery which I do most weekends occasionally travelling to Germany and Slovenia to take part in competitions there. I stumbled across this site a few days ago and thought it would be a good way of finding out more about what';s going on in the neighbourhood.

Morning Geoff, welcome to the site and the town.
So many people come here from Ealing, we were in Kent Avenue many years ago, up near Pitshanger, my mum is still in Brentford. What about you?

Has there been a thread who comes from where originally? Although I went to sixth form at Challoners I grew up in Pinner and Northwood, before Ruislip, and when moving to Chalfont St Peter 5 or 6 years ago was amazed at how many people round these parts have moved out from Middlesex. I live in Seer Green now - I guess this post can count as my introduction as I haven't posted one before - hi all!

I know several people who live here now and have come from the Harrow postal area. I assume you've browsed before, so welcome may not be appropriate salutations, so good to see you posting, hope it's the first of many.

I'l stop lurking and add my penny's worth to the thread.

I'm 36, and was born in Amersham Hospital in 1971. I spent the first 16 years of my life in Old Amersham, going to St. Mary's School. Despite not having lived in Amersham for over 20 years I'm sure I could navigate around it blindfolded today, such was my familiarity with it when I was a child there.

I enjoyed the pictures of the Gasometers put on the website, a real blast from the past! Anyone remember when the Bowyers' factory was a going concern as well?

Regards

Adrian

Hello Adrian,
I certainly remember the smell of the Bowyers factory! I was once stuck in traffic behind a lorry delivering a load of live pigs, they were making an awful screaming noise - not sure that the theory that these animals don't know where they are going is all that true.

The Bowyers Factory was a land mark in many ways for years. I still am trying to track down a picture of it for the site.

For those that don't know, it was situated on the land that is now the Tesco car park.

I worked at the Bowyers factory for a wonderful 6 years! I stank when i got home of an evening because i worked in the egg shelling department, and sometimes if i smell a boiled egg even today i still feel sick! Having said that, the money was good and i only had to walk a couple of minutes to get there so it could have been worse. I can tell you that the smell from the Tesco bakery when its cooking Hot Cross Buns far out does the stench of a Bowyers steak and kidney pud any day. I like Adrian can do the tour of the old town blind fold but can honestly say that no matter where i go i still think that if you sit at the top of Barn Meadow and look towards the bottom you will have to go a long way to find such a beautiful sight that in my opinion dipicts rural England....

Hi

Another newbie alert here.

Been lurking for a while, but had an urgent need to post today, so I signed up.

Lived in Chalfont St Peter since 1970 (attended DCGS 1976-82; anyone else on here from that era??; and used to drink in the Swan, then the Saracens and then the Iron Horse) and now live in Seer Green. Working in the IT game for the last 20-odd years. Interests include genealogy and wildlife.

Cheers

Hi Dave. I'm from the same era (also starting senior school in the year of the drought), though I wasn't in Amersham then. However, I too have been in IT for nearly 20 years, though not as an uber techie (I translate the techie stuff to real language that (hopefully) users can understand). ;)
