I love cycling. Amersham's got some nice woodland around, although they're too small, and I do get fed up having to ride back up to the top of the hill whichever way I go from home!

Hello Ash and welcome. I heartily agree with the above. One of the best things about where we used to live (Hemel) was that it was a pleasant 5 mile cycle to Ashridge, which is a large and lovely National Trust forest. That aside, Amersham is much nicer place to live though.

Hello,

I just discovered your website. I have been researching the English Norwood and Northwood families for over 40 years.
My American ancestor was Francis Norwood of Gloucester Mass (1636-1709). I have been looking for his English origins all that time.

There were Norwoods in Amersham, I wonder if any were involved in the martyrdom ?

I am a retired engineer, live in Cincinnati Ohio USA.

I look forward to learning more about Amersham

I enjoy walking and appreciating local countryside ( which is why I left London ) I am an avid reader, enjoy socialising/eating out and spending time with my close friends ( most of which are still in London ) I enjoy going the movies, as long as there is something decent on, which there doesn't seem to have been for a while (sigh) and just chilling out in the garden, glass of red in hand :)

Welcome to Amersham Norwood :)

Much luck for your quest to find out about your history/background. I know how exciting that can be, and sometimes eye opening! :)
Kind regards,

Sian Josette.

Well hello... as a newbie on this forum I thought I might just as well introduce myself. My name is Ash, and Funkydoodycool is the name of my website (add a www. and a .co.uk and away you go), on which you can find samples of and links to more of my art work, which is my biggest hobby. Asides from that, I listen to music at any available time, I play too many video games, and I love cycling. Amersham's got some nice woodland around, although they're too small, and I do get fed up having to ride back up to the top of the hill whichever way I go from home! I also spend a little too much time browsing internet forums.

OOps! A little late I know, but, welcome Ash!

Your mention of trying to sell your artwork interests me as I am getting a portfolio of my work together to hopefully sell in the near future!

Good Luck! :)

Kind regards,

Sian Josette.

You'll find a lot of my work at http://funkydoodycool.deviantart.com. A chunk of it is rubbish, quick sketches and messing about, but if you look back you'll find a load of portraits, mostly drawn using vectors on my PC. I also make comics, and am working hard on one right now (when I stop typing this anyway!) I tend to draw portraits, as people fascinate me.

What about your work? I'd love to see it!

Hello, there is a Norwood Court in Old Amersham off The Broadway - is this something to do with your Ancestors? Would be interesting to know a little more since I live there!

My work is mostly made up of ink drawings, of the surrounding woodland here in Amersham/ Bucks etc... I am trying to be a little more adventurous, and will get the old water colours/oils out at some point.

I will be sure to have a look at your daubings! I am sure they are not rubbish. We artsists do so love to criticise our own work :)

I don't actually have an exhibition on, but am hoping that I can find someone who will point me in the right direction! :)

Welcome to the forum, Oryx. Whilst I like your taste in books, I think you're brave to name yourself after one of the characters in it, regardless of how beguiling she was.

Hi all, I am Cel. I live in the US in Ohio. I came across this site while doing some family genealogy searching. I decided to join, as my ancestors hail from England. I feel as somewhat of an "outsider" living here in the states and joining, but ahh well. It's a leap fo faith I guess. I am married to my husband Don for the last 14 years and we have 3 children, 2 boys ages 8 and 6 and a daughter age 4. I don't really know what else to say....but, thanks for letting me join!!

Welcome Cel. The net isn't constrained by mere geography and should you ever come to Amersham (perhaps not at the current exchange rate), you'll have more of a feel for the place.

Hello - Im Stephen. We moved to Amersham just over a year ago from Pinner - I'm familiar with the area having done lots of walks around here. Still getting used to the place though - it's like England was in the suburbs 15 years ago without all the problems they now have; its strange when you tell people that you've moved to Amersham they think it's the other end of the world yet it's only 13 miles from where we used to live!!

I like the place but I wish I could say that it's quieter than where we lived - you're never far from the hub of the traffic because of the main roads - and it's much colder here up in the Chilterns brr..those winds. Like Amersham Rock and Roll Club, the Swimming Pool and the fact that it has just the right number of shops.

Finally what do you all talk about your Forum?

Hi Stephen, we're from Rayners Lane and at one stage I worked in Pinner, in an office above Gibbs Gillespie. We've been here two and a half years now and it's truly wonderful.

Sorry forgot to add welcome to the area and the forum!

Hi Stephen and welcome to Amersham and the forum. An interesting comment about Amersham having "just the right number of shops", which I think is true. However, you asked what we talked about on the forum, and as you browse around you'll see there is plenty of debate about whether we have the right mix of shops (in which Tesco features prominently). Wheelie bins were a big topic 18 months ago, but with a cool wet summer, objections subsided.

And don't forget, you can meet (some of) us at an informal meet over a drink or two on Sunday 27th. See Forum Meet thread.

Hi Steve

Welcome, I think you've made the right choice, I worked in Harrow between 1978 - 1987, Lived there between 1982 - 1986 when we moved to Amersham to start a family. Greater London is fine for work, but I couldn't live there anymore.

welcome, I hail from Sarf 'Arra originally. When we moved here 20 years ago it was like Engalnd inthe suburbs 20 years before without all the problems.

Hi There

I've been a lurker on and off for a few months now and decided it was time to take the plunge.

I was born and bred in Amersham, having been born in Amersham Hospital some 43 years ago, grew up and worked in the town, then after the death of my Mother left and went to London in 1991, although I was always back visiting family and even worked in Chesham for 5 of those years away! I returned to live in Amersham in 2005 with a wife and two young children, after 3 years living in Ashridge near Berkhamsted and Ivinghoe.

My Fathers family moved out to Amersham in the 50's from Ealing and my Mother's side from Birmingham and Essex around the same time. All my Grandparents spent the rest of their lives here. My family have also owned and run various businesses in the area over the years but now it's only my Great Aunt and my brood left.

Amersham had changed a lot over the last 40 odd years and IMO, some things for the worse and some for the better!

Hi Alan/Delta, though probably easiest to stick to your user name as there are already 2 Alans on the forum.

As a relative newcomer to Amersham (barely 2 1/2 years, though I'd driven through several times a year for more than 15 years before that), I'd be interested in what you see as the best and worst changes...

Cool I can spell that I mean 'IMO'

I've lived in Amersham for nearly 22 years, but as Delta says things have change, but over 40 years, so much has change regardless of geography. Colour TV, Computers and all that goes with that, games machines (computers), Video and camera's, better cars, just technology in general. As for business, global change has affected that globally, as an area it still has a lot going for it, and even if I won the lottery I'd stay here. :)

Hi
I'm Joan. Move with partner Mike to Amersham in August 2006 from Harrow.
We knew from the first day we had made the right decison. I use to come to Amersham and the surrounding areas with my school on geography field trips and always said I would live her one day.

Yes I commute to London up to Waterloo or Denmark Hill but it worth it and makes me appreciate what I have as the train goes deeper and deeper into the Chiltern Hills.

We like the combination of town and country. We use London for music gigs and museums on a regular basis but we also love walking and have been using the pathways and finding interesting old pubs on route.

I also love cooking and experimenting and have been getting to grips with the the already installed rayburn.

I think we need to be careful otherwise the Hill will become characterless

Welcome to the forum, Joan (and Mike).

As you're walkers, I presume you've seen the recent topic in What's On, which has links to all sorts of footpath guides (which mostly include places to stop off for a drink or meal)?

You're right about the danger of Amersham on the Hill losing its character, but it's a national, nay international, trend. I'm not sure what can (or should?) be done about it...

Hello,

My name is Charlotte and I am hoping to move to Amersham this year with my husband and two children. We currently live in London and can't wait to get out.

We started visiting Amersham last year and we think it will be a lovely place to bring up our children.

Other than reading this forum quite obsessively and checking Rightmove for property in the Amersham area I like to sew and do the odd bit of knitting.

Hopefully all going well we can be settled in by the time my son starts school.

I think this website is a great source of information and also entertaining.

Thanks everyone.

Charlotte

Hi all,

I'm John (as you guessed). I grew up in Tring, but I've lived in Amersham-on-the-Hill since 1981. I signed up here a while ago and have lurked occasionally and posted a message or two, but time is often short.

I'm an IT consultant, primarily in the corporate and healthcare markets. No wife, children or pets to brag about.

Likes and interests... Photography, travel, countryside and scenery, technology and engineering in general, various kinds of music. Planes, trains and automobiles. Sailing (though not for a while). Good meals and good beer in country pubs. Tasmania.

Dislikes... Several, mostly related to politicians, environmentalists and the rubbish and disinformation many of them spout.

What's good about Amersham? It's a civilised place, with a nice location in the Chilterns, pleasant countryside within easy reach, and good road and rail links. The shops aren't that great, apart from a few excellent specialists, but we have Tesco, M&S and now Starbucks, which is good enough for me :)
