| Chiltern Avenue is perhaps the road
which has changed most over the past 40 years. The road links the station to
Woodside Road and in the 1960s, much of the road was still unmade with fields
and waste ground along parts of its length. In the 1980s, the office building above was built opposite the station on the corner of Chiltern Avenue and Hill Avenue. The building replaced the old Station Garages building. |

Above, the multi storey station car park. In the back ground, the NHBC office building. Both the above were built on the old coal and goods yard of the station.

The new multi storey car park provided increased parking for commuters and replaced the station car park located the other side of the railway. Parking was becoming a problem with many commuters parking in residential areas all day. The new car park, opened in the 1980s, has improved the situation coupled with parking restrictions elsewhere, but still many residential streets endure people parking all day there rather than pay to park in a car park.

Next to the police station is the health centre, built in the 1970s it replaced a lot of doctors surgeries dotted around Amersham.

Much of Chiltern Avenue can be regarded as Amersham's civic centre. Above, the Chiltern District Council Offices built in the 1980s to replace cramped accommodation in Old Amersham (Elmodesham House). The building was erected on old waste ground and an open air car park.

Amersham library, opened in the 1960s. In summer 2001 plans were announced by groups to redevelop the library site. One scheme involved moving the library to Sycamore Road on the site of St. Michaels church, building additional shops and re building St. Michaels church on the library site. The other plan involved building a new library, church (Kings Church) and theatre and conference facilities on the site. Nothing came of these plans, but the potential for future change remains

The Community centre, this part was built in the early 1970s and comprises a hall and meeting rooms. The centre is used a lot by local groups.

Also part of the Community Centre are these old farm buildings. This part of Amersham was where Woodside Farm used to be. This was one of the farms on Amersham Common that existed before the area was developed to become Amersham on the Hill.

Rather than demolish the farm buildings, some have been put to a new use as part of the Community Centre.

Chiltern Pools, originally opened in 1969. Amersham's first swimming pool had been an open air pool formed from the Misbourne in the Old Town, not far from the present car park, facilities were rather crude compared to today's standards and closed shortly after World War II. The new pool complex originally comprised a small training pool and large pool. Over the years the complex has been extended to include squash courts, a climbing wall and a gym. In the 1990s the complex was refurbished to include new pools with water chutes.
