| At the top of Hill Avenue is the
station. Opened in 1892 it has to be said it is not that spectacular! It was
extended in 1960 when an extra platform was added in preparation for the
electrification of the Metropolitan line from Rickmansworth. Amersham then
became the end of the "Met" with British rail (now Chiltern Railways) providing
a service onwards to Aylesbury. The railway had to traverse the top of the hills above Amersham owing to the demands of the local land owners. This meant that when the station opened in Amersham, it was a long distance from the centre of Old Amersham and there was little development by the station. Development was slow to start. Amersham was spared the Victorian developments around stations so common in other towns. |

| Hill Avenue looking towards
Oakfield Corner. The buildings in the middle of the picture were some
of the first to be built on Hill Avenue. The two storey post office was
opened in the 1960s with a sorting office behind it. This post
office closed and is now in the Londis store accross the road
(having for many years been in the now closed Martins in Sycamore
Road). The modern Office building on the right is on the site of the
old Station Garages. For a long time once a year on Good Friday the end of Hill Avenue was closed off at the station end to mark the fact that the road was private and not a public right of way. |

| Hill Avenue, Oakfield Corner End. The Entertainer toy shop is a great success story. Local trader Gary Grant opened his first shop on Sycamore Road (taking over the Baby bar) in the early 1980s. He has now developed his business to become one of the country's leading toy retailers with branches nationwide. The Entertainer's head office and ware house is in Bell Lane, Little Chalfont on the old Boughtons site. |

| A 1960s development on Hill Avenue.
It was not certain if Hill Avenue would develop into a shopping street, many of
the original buildings erected in the 1920s were houses, which were either
later developed into shops, or demolished to make way for new developments such
as above. The garage at the end has now closed and in 2008 Tesco opened a Tesco Metro store. There was quite a lot of opposition to this as Tesco already have a large super store in Old Amersham and the new Tesco Metro is right next to a Londis store. If you are interested in details of some of the old shops that used to be in Amersham, see the page here |
