Pictorial Tour of Amersham
The Market Hall

The Market Hall
Dominating the centre of Old Amersham is the 17th Century Market Hall. Built 1682 and given to the Town by the Drake family. The market was held underneath and the trade guild meetings in the room above. The building is still in use with various stalls often under the hall and the rooms above used for public and social gatherings.
A view from under the market hall looking down High Street. Note how the corner has been filled in to stop it being used as a place to sleep.
Looking towards Market Square. On the left are the stairs to the meeting room above. The old lock up cell is on the left of the arch.
Still outside the market hall is the old town pump. Apparently, after spending the night in the cell situated on the ground floor of the market hall (you can see the cell window on the left), the local villains would be awakened by a visit to the pump! The lock up window is on the left of the pump.

With the road closed to traffic on Heritage Day 2006, one could get a close look at the Hall.

The turret on the top of the Hall houses a clock and bell. For many years the bell (which was cast locally) was rang to summon the volunteer fire service. The bell also used to be rung on Tuesdays at noon to announce the market. The clock could be seen from the old Weller brewery in Church Street, so to stop the workers popping out to see what time it was, the brewery arranged with the Drakes for the clock face facing Church Street to be removed!
A view all the High Street towards the Market Hall. The Crown Hotel on the right of the Market Hall used to have a porch, which I believe was demolished by a lorry in the 1970s. Behind the market hall used to be a row of houses, these were demolished in 1939 as part of a slum clearance project. Before the building of the Amersham by-pass, the narrowing of the road by the hall was a real bottle neck. In the early 1900s, an open air film show was given in Amersham, a temporary screen was put on the side of the market hall shown in the above picture.
