Pictorial Tour of Amersham
Yards & Alleys - Off the Beaten Track

Ward Yard
Off the High Street are many yards belonging to the former coaching inns, alms houses, and lanes. Much of the area off the High Street is private property. Above is Ward Place between The Crown and the Kings Arms.
Chapel Yard
A view along Chapel Yard, an alley way leading to the High Street from The Platt. The red brick building is an old warehouse, now converted into housing. The old warehouse used to store such things as flour, drugs and spirits, an old hoist is still visible. The warehouse served Haddons Pharmacy on the High Street, which has fine iron work above the shop front from 1910. Haddon's was rare as a chemist which held a license to sell spirits..
Looking the other way along Chapel Yard towards The Platt and the Baptist Chapel, now the Kings Church, with its fine domed or lantern roof. I have been told, but cannot confirm, that the dome is the second largest unsupported dome in England. (St. Paul's being the largest)

Post Office Cottages
Between the High Street and Barn Meadow is this lovely row of alms houses - Post Office Cottages or the day Almshouses. The building on the hill in the background is the old rectory for St. Mary's
